Visual Arts Brampton is starting a Wednesday evening comic book workshop. Starting August 7, the goal of this program is to foster the skills necessary for those who are interested in creating their own characters and comic storylines. The workshop will cover storytelling, character design, storyboarding, layout, penciling, lettering, and colour rendering.

During the course, artwork will be uploaded to a facebook page created specially for the new workshop, https://www.facebook.com/VABComicArt

An exhibit of the works created by all students in the course is planned for Artway Gallery in Shoppers World Brampton, in January. If enough works are created, a complication book will be published.

Tuesday painting workshop with Mary Noble return, October 4

Mary Noble's Tuesday painting workshops are returning on October 4, running for eight weeks until November 22. Classes run from 9:30 am to half-past noon. Fees are $20 a day, a total of $160 for eight weeks.

To meet with the demands of students from previous sessions with Mary, asking for acrylic painting sessions, various lessons will be structured for either acrylic or watercolour.

Watercolours with William Band returns March 15

William Band is teaching another round of workshops at Visual Arts Brampton, from March 15 to April 5, 2011. The 4-week-long course costs $100, running Tuesdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Do you have a favourite photograph that you’d like to paint?

This workshop is designed for anyone wishing to explore their individual sense of expression. You will learn basic image cropping, composition, drawing, perspective, colour mixing and how to work with acrylics and water based oils if needed.

Visual Arts Brampton Creative Studios are a relaxed studio environment, and Debra welcomes students of all levels to come and create.

Debra Ali is an artist and graphic designer, who has studied Fine Arts at Sheridan College. A member of Visual Arts Brampton since 2005, she won the People's Choice Award at the 2006 Art Gallery of Peel Juried Art Show.

Three more William Band watercolour workshops this year

With his current workshop ending in a few weeks, William Band has announced three upcoming watercolour workshops, in June, from September through November, and in November. Each will be held on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, at the Visual Arts Brampton Studio, at Highway 10/Hurontario and Steeles Avenue. [Location on Google Maps]

The classes are a friendly, welcoming community of learners, and has returned thanks to popular demand many times over the past year. Artists of any level are encouraged to join these classes, which explore various areas of the medium, primarily with still life and landscapes.

Band will be teaching the following dates:

• 4 week class, June 1, 6, 15, and 22,
• 8 week class, September 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26, and November 2
• 4 week class, November 9, 16, 23, 30.

Band has studied with respected Canadian artists including Alan Collier, Bill Stidworthy, and Franklin Arbuckle. After a successful career in commercial art, he returned to his first love, painting. William's art is based on his travels, from canoeing through northern Ontario lakes, to painting in Scotland.

Besides Visual Arts Brampton, William's workshop schedule includes stops across Ontario, as well as multiple times in Plain Field, Illinois.

Makini in the Booster, Glenn Bernabe online

An article about VAB student Makini Calliste-Woolard has appeared in this week's Brampton Booster, the Thursday newspaper published by the Guardian. A longer version of the article appears online.

Our upcoming workshop, taught by Glenn Bernabe, appears online and will hopefully make the print edition. Over the last few months, The Guardian has begun to publish articles online immediately, before the print edition comes out.

“Portraiture is a way of recording people. Their personality, character, status, the place and time they lived, the environment in which they live or simply showing beauty.” Designed for those with minimal drawing skills, this portraiture course focuses on applying measuring methods, proportion, and alignment when depicting the human face and figure. Using pencil, charcoal and pastel, students will work from a live, clothed model, capturing the face in simplified terms through basic structural studies of the face and skull as well as understanding the body and its form. Tuiton includes both instruction fees and the model's fee. Class size will be 6 to 12 students. Acrylic for teens, with Emily Kowalik

Join Emily Kowalik from August 10 to 14 this summer, for five days of acrylic instruction. Open to teens from ages 12 to 18, this class will run 10 am to 2 pm.

Emily is the current co-instructor of Visual Arts Brampton's popular art classes for 6-to-8-year-olds. She has been teaching these classes for the last two years. Emily is currently a student at Mayfield School of the Arts, in her final year.

William Band on display at BBOT

Last week, a display of watercolour paintings by William Band went on display at the Brampton Board of Trade offices. A Visual Arts Brampton member, Band is currently teaching a watercolour workshop at the studio, with only two more weeks to go.

For the last few months, Paul Highgate has been on display, with a display of his scratchboard artwork.

This 8-week workshop covers an overview of perspective, still life drawing, portraits, two weeks of the whiteline drawing medium of scratchboard, and two weeks with the art of coloured pencil.

Keith Moreau is a Brampton artist-illustrator, and has taught for this workshop for many years, at various locations around the GTA. His Patriotic Pickup coloured pencil piece was shown in the nationally-entered and nationally-touring Art of the Automobile exhibit, which included a stop in Toronto at the Canadian International Autoshow. He was the 1992 City of Brampton Arts Person of the Year.

Keith's artwork, along with that of William Band, Emily Kowalik, and Paulina Su, will be featured in Artway Gallery at Shoppers World, this January.

Design and produce your own Christmas card, using block printing and other techniques. This easy-cutting technique allows you to print multiple greeting cards, ready to send.

Instructor Keith Moreau has won an award from the Arts Etobicoke juried show for his printmaking, and his original prints are in the corporate collections of the City of Toronto, William Osler Health Centre, and Astral Media. He has taught for a couple of decades, for places including Visual Arts Brampton, the Living Arts Centre, and Curry's Artist Supplies school.

Beginner's watercolour workshop at VAB Studio

Professional artist Mary Noble will be teaching a beginner's watercolour workshop at the Visual Arts Brampton Creative Studios early next year. The class will run every Thursday for eight weeks, from January 17 to February 21, from 12:30 to 3:00 pm.

Weekly, students will discover how to paint still lifes and landscapes. They will find a greater awareness and understanding of colour and colour theory, while they learn valuable painting techniques like washes.

Whether students have taken art workshops in the past, or this is their first time, they'll benefit for Mary's expertise and enthusiasm.

The class will be capped at seven people, guaranteeing that you'll have plenty of personal attention with Mary. Students should book early to avoid disappointment.

Mary Noble has a Bachelor of the Arts in Art History from University of Toronto, and studied Illustration at Sheridan College. Along with being one of Visual Arts Brampton's most requested instructors, Mary has taught for the Peel Board of Education's evening courses, Brampton Parks and Recreation, and privately.

The eight-week workshop costs $80.

Artist Keith Moreau will be teaching an eight-week workshop at the Visual Arts Brampton Creative Studio in March.

Moreau, an experienced illustrator and art instructor, will be teaching Drawing in Colour and Black & White on Thursdays from March 1 to April 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.

In the first two weeks, students will participate in simple exercises to understand perspective. Following weeks will feature still life drawing, then portraits. Two weeks are then devoted to the unique white-line drawing medium of scratchboard, and then two weeks of coloured pencil.

This workshop costs $40, including some supplies and tools for in-studio use.

The VAB Creative Studio is located in the lower level of the Bartley Square Mall, at the corner of Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue. For information or to register, call 905-453-9142.

Still time to get into portfolio lessons

Are you a student who wants to attend a high school arts programme? Brush up your portfolio at Visual Arts Brampton.

After covering the basics of perspective in the first week, students will choose the order in which to complete school entry assignments, with Keith's one-on-one guidance. Attending to the students' individual needs, all students will leave with a greater sense of self-confidence, knowing they raised the quality of their portfolio, beyond their existing ability.

This is the second year Keith is holding the program. Keith heard back from most students, all of whom had been accepted.
