Conrad's art on cover

VAB member Conrad Mieschke has his artwork on the cover of The Brampton Guardian. Shown was "Farm Horse". This is his second year in a row with work on the cover.

Previously, member Keith Moreau had two works on the cover, including one of his son Nicholas, as the New Year's baby.

Due to demand, Visual Arts Brampton will be adding a session for 6- and 7-year-olds to its Saturday youth classes.

It will run during the morning timeslot, but will be taught by a former VAB student Ilichna Morasky, who is now in her third year at Sheridan College, studying illustration.

Morasky will be teaching weekly from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m., while Keith Moreau will be holding his 8- to 12-year-old sessions from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

VAB is located at One Bartley Bull Parkway in the lower level of the Bartley Square Mall (corner of Hwy. 10 and Steeles Avenue). For information, call 905-453-9142 or visit visualartsbrampton.com.

Youth Achievement Awards 2006

Here's a link to the photos:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55759550@N00/sets/72157594426476658/

If anyone has their own group shots they'd like to be added, either of each medal standing, or their child with a few friends, by all means send them to us (visualartsbrampton@gmail.com) and we'll post them.

No word just yet on when the awards ceremony segment will air on First Local, channel Rogers 10.

Also, we'll be investigating getting a nearby school gym for next year, to provide more space for the ceremonies. We'll probably try to book either Davis or Helen Wilson, both are fairly close to the studio, and would provide a less-cramped situation.

"The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated"

That quote thanks to Mark Twain. Turns out the Bulletin will resume in early 2007, under the stewardship of a new editor, Dave Marshall.

This of course corrects a previous post, called "
Brampton Bulletin is dead".

Award ceremony info

The youth art was judged on Monday night, by nine of our adult members. It took them from 7:15 to after 11:00 pm to judge things.

WHO GOT WHAT AWARD: We're not going to tell anyone, until the ceremony happens. There were three or four honourable mentions, the rest of the 45 entrants all got either bronze, silver, or gold medallions.

WHEN IS THE CEREMONY?: The award ceremonies are next Saturday--that's December 16.
  • Doors will open around 10:45 am
  • Award ceremonies will start at 11:00 am
  • We hope to actually start handing out the awards by 11:15 am
  • By noon we should be done handing out the awards, at this point it's the pizza party.

IS THERE A CLASS THAT WEEK?: There are no classes that week, so don't bother showing up at 9:30 am, 1:00 pm, or 3:15 pm for the regular classes. Every year at two or three people do, so don't.

WHAT'S TO EAT?: Pizza, mainly. We'll have other stuff too, snacks.

CAN I HELP?: If you want to bring food to the party, any sort of finger food, feel free to do so.

Whodunit? Mary Chorniuk, that's who.

http://www.ocad.ca/about_ocad/support_ocad/benefit_events.htm

Member Mary Chorniuk was one of the artists participating at the Whodunit? OCAS Mystery Art Sale. As their website says "It’s an exhibition and sale of pieces of original art by well-known and celebrity artists, faculty, alumni and students."
Gaining in popularity year after year, the Whodunit? OCAD Mystery Art Sale offers hundreds of original works donated by Canadian artists and creative celebrities. Every piece measures 5½ x 7½ inches and each piece is $75. The mystery -- who created the art -- is solved only after the piece is bought and turned over to reveal the artist's name on the back.

Margaret Atwood, Bruce Cockburn, Tony Urquhart, Mary Pratt and Christopher Pratt were all celebrity contributors to the show.

Brampton Bulletin is dead

Despite the fact the website is still up, the Brampton Bulletin seems to be as good as dead. Their answering machine has been full for weeks, we've had no response to emails, and writers for the site haven't heard anything. If anyone has any news on what exactly killed the Bulletin, Nick would like to know for history's sake.

Read "The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated" for a update to this story.

Saturday is deadline for youth awards

This Saturday you must have your portfolio ready for the judges.

You need:
  • 12 TV assignments: At least 2 must be portraits, 2 must be still life, and 2 must be animal. You may choose whatever TV assignments for the other six.
  • 12 Home assignments: Any 12.
  • Any other art that you want to show off to the judges. Try and get as much good stuff as you've got.

Questions?

One of a Kind Show

One of this year's featured artisans at the One of a Kind Show in Toronto is our very own Maria Dlubak, and her daughter Anna. The two of them make pillows, and were chosen to represent the show in print, television, and online advertisements.

From the site:

New to the One of a Kind Show, this talented mother and daughter creative team have a passion for art and design and use screen printing as their medium. Their fascination for creating nature inspired designs stems from travel in Poland, Germany, and South Africa as well as a family tradition of gardening. They collaborate to create the designs that are featured on pillows. They use
drawings as well as photographs as a basis for their artwork.

Still time to get into portfolio lessons

Are you a student who wants to attend a high school arts programme? Brush up your portfolio at Visual Arts Brampton.

After covering the basics of perspective in the first week, students will choose the order in which to complete school entry assignments, with Keith's one-on-one guidance. Attending to the students' individual needs, all students will leave with a greater sense of self-confidence, knowing they raised the quality of their portfolio, beyond their existing ability.

This is the second year Keith is holding the program. Keith heard back from most students, all of whom had been accepted.

See this post for more detail.

Transcript of an interview for "Mayfield Exposed!"

The following is a transcript of an interview with Paulina Su (P) and Stephanie Hagendorn (S), with the Rogers program daytime (H), on 23 October 2006. (B signifys both Paulina and Stephanie simultaneously.)

H: Welcome back to “daytime” everyone, joining me now are Paulina Su and Stephanie Hagendorn from Mayfield Secondary School. Well thank you so much for being here. And we are talking about “Mayfield Exposed!”
S: Yeah.
H: So how are we exposing Mayfield? What's that all about?
S: Basically we're just showing different artists in Mayfield, their artwork, and just kinda getting their artwork out there, so people can see what we're doing, at Mayfield.
H: So what are you guys doing at Mayfield?
P: A lot of, um, art. And we do a lot of variety of art, from collages to photography to printmaking, Mayfield covers all the bases of art, so if you're really into art, it's a really good school to get into.
H: Excellent, so you get to try a little something new.
B: Yeah
S: 'Cause at home you usually just have the basics like paint...
P: ...and pencil crayons...
S: ...and pencil crayons, and stuff like that. But when you go to Mayfield, you get to mold clay, do printmaking, we're doing like intaglio and linograph, it's really interesting.
H: Mm. You lost me, intaglio.
B: (chuckles)
H: Some art vernacular there. Now you guys have also worked with a kiln, and fired things, and you say there are chemicals.
S: Yeah. (chuckles)
H: See was saying 'we work with chemicals!' So what kind of stuff do you do with that?
P: We do photography, we do it in a dark room, a room that's like totally pitch black, and you feel your way through things, and you make a picture with a photogram, and then you expose it using chemicals. So it's not your basical... basic, like point and shoot camera.
H: So you work with 35mm film and that kind of stuff?
S: Yeah.
H: That's exciting, I can relate to that. That was something I learned when I was in high school as well. Now, you're having an exhibit, can people go now, or?
S: Oh yeah.
P: Yeah, it's still up, it's on until November 10th, and yeah.
H: So tell us a little bit, Stephanie, about what you have pictured at the exhibit?
S: I have photographs featured that I had taken from my grade 10 art course, and it was my favourite course, so I was really into it, and we really drove my family and my mom for hours looking for different landscapes and stuff and it was really fun. Um, I used to have a photomontage and it was took out, unfortunately, and I also have one drawing.
H: Well that's really good, and so you guys experiment with a couple different mediums there? And what about you Paulina?
P: There's a lot of my pencil crayon work, because I love pencil crayon, because it's so precise, and it's so precise and exact, but, um, yeah. And our art show is on at Shoppers World, it's at Fridge Front Gallery, which is owned by Visual Arts Brampton, the studios that we went to and that's how we met.
H: Okay, so you guys met at Visual Arts Brampton?
S: Yeah.
H: So now, is this art, is that something that you'd like to pursue in the future, or is this just a fun past time for you?
S: For me personally, if I can find something within the art field that I like, I will pursue it. Until then, no, not really.
H: What about you, Paulina?
P: I think I'd like to go into the art field. I'd like to be an art teacher or an English teacher when I grow up. 'Cause I've like already grown up with art, I've done it since when I was little, it's like a comfort spot for me.
H: Ah, wonderful. Now I know at Mayfield you get to try a lot of different types of art. Is there something in particular that you haven't tried yet, that you would like to?
S: Thinking about it, I don't think, there's a few other things that we haven't done yet, that we're going to do eventually, but um, no, not really. Maybe like using really big photograms.
H: What's a photogram?
S: A photogram is a cameraless photo. Like, you get the sheet of paper to use for the enlarger, but it's like a really big one. And you get to put stuff on it and just shine light on it, and then develop it, and that's how you get the picture, but it's not like details, it's just like a silhoutte.
P: Yeah.
S: ...so it's really cool.
H: So how important do you think it is to have an art program like Mayfield has, at your school? How is that for you guys?
S: Um, it's important that then people who like art can go further with it...
P: Yeah, get to know it a bit more. And if you really want to go into the field, it really helps your, like, resume or anything, like, if you go into university for art then they really consider Mayfield, 'cause you've been doing it for every year that you were at high school.
H: Right. Thank you so much for joining us, I really appreciate it, “Mayfield Exposed!”, check it out!

The Portfolio Workroom

The Portfolio Workroom is a course for grade 12 students planning a career in the fine arts, animation, or illustration fields. Held at the Visual Arts Brampton Creative Studios, Sheridan third-year students Ilichna Morasky and Collin Chan will help students achieve a higher standard of work by enhancing their foundational skills for a portfolio.

The course includes watercolour, acrylic, life drawing/painting, object drawing, and basic anatomical studies. The objective is to help students develop skills in foundations for a basic portfolio, in time for an application towards either Sheridan College or OCAD.

The class starts Sunday, November 5, and runs for fourteen weeks, pausing for the holiday season.

Workroom costs $500, which includes studio usage and models, materials extra. Contact the instructors at portfolioworkroom@gmail.com for more information.

Ilichna and Colin will be speaking at both Mayfield S.S. and North Park S.S. on October 20, and at Notre Dame S.S. on October 26. On October 27, they will appear on daytime (Rogers ch. 10, 11 am to noon) promoting their classes.

"Mayfield Exposed!" end date established

We've set a firm date for the end of the "Mayfield Exposed!" exhibit at Fridge Front Gallery. While it was originally set to be taken out on October 27, November 10 will be the last day to see the diverse creative content.

Organizers Paulina Su and Stephanie Hagendorn are set to appear on Rogers' program "daytime", on October 23rd at 11 am.

We're still looking for schools to participate, by creating a display of their student's artworks for the space.

Are you a teacher, student, or parent who thinks their class, grade, or whole school would want to have an exhibit? Contact us to book a month for your school, any grade(s), any talent level(s), any kind of visual arts. Call 905-453-9142, or email us at visualartsbrampton@gmail.com

Library bookmarks

VAB president Keith Moreau will be judging the Brampton Library system's bookmark competition in the near future. For the past eight years, Keith has participated in selecting which images are reproduced on free bookmarks, available to all library visitors.
Brampton - Brampton Library's 8th Annual Bookmark Contest kicks off on Monday, October 16. This year the contest has been expanded to include secondary school participants. Students are invited to design a bookmark based on this year's selected theme: "My Library Tells a Story."

Entries of original artwork based on the contest theme will be accepted until November 5, 2006. One prize will be awarded in each of six categories: preschool to kindergarten; grades 1 to 3; grades 4 to 5; grades 6 to 8; grades 9 to 10; and grades 11 to 12. Winning designs will be printed and distributed to the public through all Brampton Library locations and will also be featured on the Library website.

Once the contest launches, entry forms can be picked up at any Library location or downloaded online at www.bramlib.on.ca.

World Art Gallery refurbished

Over the last couple of months, we've been really slow in updating the World Art Gallery, or "WAG", the exhibit space that is spun-off our "Snail Mail World Postcard Art Show".

We've been receiving entries in gradually, however we're lacking volunteers to scan them in and get them online. Then, once we got them online, the display space was lacking until recently.

The cases were built with about eight lines of fishing line attached to either side of the case. Then on the lines, we have little centimetre tall clothespins, holding the postcard-sized pieces up. Only thing, it was amazing how much of a bend this high-grade fishing line had to it, and everything just always looked slightly droopy.

So we finally had a chance to do slight refurbishments to the cases, getting rid of the fishing line, replacing it with silver wire. It's a long drawn-out process, it's taken two days already, but it certainly works a lot better.

We'll be taking pictures of the cases in a little bit, and hopefully be getting a volunteer to go through the newer entries, and upload them to the WAG site, so that we can get those entries to the cases.

For those unfamiliar with our World Art Gallery, people from about 20 countries have participated, sending in postcard-sized artwork, or reproductions of artwork. Entries must be 4 inches by 6 inches, no bigger, no smaller. The entries stay online permanently, and in the display cases semi-permanently, until we run out of room, and have to start replacing.

"Overview, A Selection of 25 Works" at Artway Gallery

"Overview" runs until midday October 27.

The exhibit is a substitute for the second month of "Old Things", the previous display. Next year October, "Wheels" is the theme, as recently announced.

Brampton Bulletin on hiatus

We recently found out that the Brampton Bulletin newspaper will be on hiatus. They didn't publish last week, and for the next four weeks they don't expect to be up an running. They have a new editor.

VAB member Nick Moreau often writes history columns for the paper, and they have covered multiple group events and displays. In case you haven't heard of the Bulletin, which is very likely, it claims to publish 100,000 copies, which are distributed throughout town on racks. The closest rack to the studio is at Al & Peggy Cunningham (RE/MAX agents) in Shoppers World.

Mayfield Exposed! highlights artworks of Brampton high school students
September 23, 2006

Now on display at the Fridge Front Gallery in Shoppers World is "Mayfield Exposed!", an exhibit of artworks by high school students.

Eighteen students in Mayfield School of the Arts' Visual Arts program participated, from grades nine, ten, and eleven. The exhibit was organized by Stephanie Hagendorn and Paulina Su, both students at Mayfield who were once Visual Arts Brampton teen members.

The exhibit highlights a diverse range of subject matter, medias used, and style.

Among the sixteen other artists participating are Alana Arvay, Nicole Clouston, Emily Kowalik, Susan Li, Kirsten Marry, Tiffany Modinsar, Jannin Moore, Sarah Patterson, Alexandra Platt, Ricardo Stephen, Paulina Su, Brandie Wilkerson, Kristen Wilkinson, Clint Wilson, James Wu, and Lisa Young.

Fridge Front is run by Visual Arts Brampton, and is located on the west side of Shoppers World mall in Brampton. Shoppers World at 499 Main Street South, at the corner of Steeles Avenue.

"Wheels" announced as October 2007 Artway show

Just announced... the October 2007 show will be titled "Wheels". While the show will focus on auto art, it is also open to anything else that rolls. We'll be trying to find outside artists to participate as well, seeing that the annual AJAC Art of the Auto show is no more.

Are you interested in participating, in the Greater Toronto Area, and not a VAB member? Do you know of an artist you think we should contact? Post a reply, or email visualartsbrampton@gmail.com
